with the granulated carbon,you can microwave it to clean and re activate it.
my mate does it all the time.
the high alc carbon means you can run right after distillation without the need to proof it down first.

Worth a try with a compressed cylindrical thingy?

Nah it's this stuff
500 gms was about $6 if i remember right.
the filter i use [you know the one] has a disk of scotch brite in either end to keep the granules in.
my mate has one with a single tube,but it MUST run in from bottom out from top.
like a water purifier.

OK, so no good then for mine.

Even if I hammer it to death....

for that money,i have filled four of the filter tubes [one broke a fitting and spilt the carbon]
and there is another smaller jar.
its worth the cost to set up a filter,but dont filter a grain run or you will clean the taste out of it.

ps:if you get the carbon,you will need to wash it before use,its rather dirty.
wash it,dry it,then use it.
