Sako L461 varmint stock - DIY- Now 20/222

I bought a sporter 222mag last year and have decided to give it a makeover. One of my goals for this year was to shape a walnut stock and checker it. Barry B had a piece of walnut I bought and will be glad to see it get used. I've made a couple of other stocks which are on this site but only used some rosewood I laminated, low cost and easy way to learn. So time to get serious.
This will be a 20/222 when the barrel gets done, in a varmint profile. Rather than open up the original stock that is in good condition was another reason to have a go.
I square up the sides and top first so I can get some reference points. Then drill action bolt holes on drill press. Then use a router and jig I made to get the bulk wood removed. Saw the idea for the jig on line, I use to do a similar method with the blank clamped to the side of my bench and various straight edges for guides. Jig is much easier.

Ned, that was the one I copied the idea from.

Barry, tempting to have a matched pair but I would have to buy another Sako.

A bit of progress. Lots of time spent but not much to show. Have the action glued in. Used some masking tape to give clearance on front and sides of recoil lug and rear of tang.
Should pop out easy tomorrow, never had one not release but some have you thinking.....

Going to have a look at the trigger while it is off the action. Its ok now but a little lighter would be good.

Finished for the weekend.
After a lot of sitting and contemplating I got stuck into it and hoped that a rifle stock starts coming out of the piece of wood. I 3D printed a few templates for butt and floorplate to give some guidance and also draw lines everywhere then ignore most of them.
I use the circular saw and jigsaw to remove the bulk easy bits. Then hand planes to remove some corners. I do most of the roughing out with a 4" belt sander and 80 grit belt. With a bit of care and lots of stopping and eyeing lines you can get pretty close to final shape with the powered hand tools.

Now time for the rasps and files to shape the pistol grip, flatten and smooth down the sanded butt.
I wet the stock to see the colour, the wife was impressed. Its going to show some nice grain. Good one Barry
