Bent Spindle

Post by Cammo »

I was reloading my .17 Hornet and was in the process of resizing and de-priming cases having done 50 or so when I bent the spindle and snapped the de-priming pin.

I don't know how it happened but the spindle and expander are stuck in the body of the die, any ideas or is it dead? :umm:

Regards

Depending on "how" they are stuck, it may have scored the internal body.

I would be talking to kickinback to pick his brain.

Really easy to do my guess was the case was not pushed all the way into the shell holder and the 17 decap pin and spindle are pretty small and easily bent

I would be very surprised if you have scored the die

What sort of Die is it ?

Mockery to follow :D

The dies are Hornady 2 die set for the .17 Hornet

It was with great trepidation I made the post, I could see the vultures circling but I may be able to avoid this happening in the future with your wisdom.

The spindle will not screw down and out the bottom.

Is the decapping rod wobbly in the thread ? Maybe try gripping the expander plug with some long nose pliers and bend it kinda straight, then screw the rod down out of the die. It should screw all the way through the die easily. :?

I have bent mine in the past and just screwed it out. From memory that should screw all the way down and out. Very easy to do with the 17. I was using my swaging press as a reloading press and did not feel a thing. Still do not know how it happened but getting a new one is easy....or it was but these days who knows...
