It’s here! Load development for the 17-222

Post by Branxhunter »

My old L461 action turned up yesterday with the nice shiny .17 cal Shilen I bought from the Humpy one hanging on the end.

Once the homework duties were out of the way I checked that the formed cases from Camel still chambered, slapped two loads together, and tried it out in the headlights of the ute.

Tomorrow is forecast to be fine, around 19 deg C max temp with light winds- perfect load development weather! Might throw a few more loads together to check for accuracy and velocity.

Now that shows someone was eager to get their hands on this. Trying it in the headlights of the Ute. Good stuff

Cheers Trev. I have a good supply of Lapua brass I bought from Camel.

I think DaveMickDave has a penchant for Norma brass, including in .222

He has a goodly supply. The longer I keep this the more I am in danger of doing something stupid. Really luck that 17 rem brass went north. Sexy little case

A good start Marcus, I take it you got the ring bits, not surprised the cases fitted, used the same reamer as the original chamber, in fact its only the second chamber cut with it. I liked a slightly slower powder, BM2 worked well with the added advantage of metering and flowing in the case mouth well. :D

Yes I expected that using the same reamer would avoid any issues about different chamber sizes in terms of diameter (fired cases from my Anschutz .222 won't fit in the Sako .222).

Because of the worn bolt lugs on this old L461 I thought headspace might be an issue, and that I might need to neck the cases up to .20 cal then incrementally neck them back down to .17 until they just became a crush fit. I shouldnt have worried, Darren has done an excellent job.

I did some more loading last night using AR2207, AR2206H, BM8208, AR2208, and BM2. Loaded up a set of five for each powder in 0.2gn increments to check for pressure and velocity. For most of these there is no listed loads so I looked at .17FB, .17Rem and .222 listed loads for guidance. As soon as I finish breakfast I'm heading out to give them a run.

I did - but I didn’t wait quite long enough. No velocity figures for the first couple of AR2207 groups (rounds loaded night before last) as there wasn’t enough light for the Chrony .... :?
