223 1-12 bullet weight

Post by lowndsie »

Just wondering what weight pill everyone is using in their 223? I'm using 60gr vmaxs which i love from my 1-9 twist ruger but not sure how they'll go from the tikka with its 1-12. I'm mostly shooting rabbits and foxes etc but could take the odd goat with it as well.

I was using Sierra 1365, also known as Super Roo, have shot great in the three 223 I tried them in. Also have Hornady 55gn sp, go great in the 22PPC cant see why they wouldn't go well in a 223 although I never tried them. I don't think you will have any worry with the 60gn Vmax in a 1 in 12, but you could try them and let us know how they go. :D

Not a .223 but in my Tikka T3 (1:14) .222 Rem the Nosler Custom Competition 52gn projectiles are very accurate.

+1. That bullet is the winner for varmints.

The Sierra 63SSP works very well on larger game also.

I used the 50gn sbk when I had a 223. Extremely accurate and explosive. Once shot two pigeons with one shot, they werent lined up, one was to the side and slightly to the rear of the other.

The front one completely disintegrated and a bit of shrapnel left a neat little bloodspot on the chest of the second

I run two loads in the young blokes tikka. 40gr Nosler BT with 22.5 2207. Great flat shooting load for bunnies and foxes and then 55gr Nosler BT with 21.5 2207 for bigger things. Both loads shoot half MOA.

with a 1 in 12 twist 60g will run fine ,,you'll be able to run up to 69gs in that twist any heavier you'll need a faster spin and a longer throat..but normal hunting up to 69g pills fine it will give you a bit more distance and hitting power

55gn vmax, though I recently bought an OSA tin of 900 loaded rounds with 55gn Sierra soft points, if they shoot well enough not sure I will bother loading for the 223 in future.
