2008 Hilux with 1KD engine - School me

Post by mick_762 »

Gents,
Thinking of buying one, has some good accessories that I would put on it anyway. Yes I realise it has a lot of Km's, it fits what I want it for.

School me on what to look out for.

Heard injectors are a big one, been told to listen to engine start from dead cold if possible and look for smoke.
1KD-FTV engine, has 314,000 on the clock.

Cheers,
Mick

I’d be replacing the pistons, while the head is off clean the huge amount of Black Death out of the intake tract post egr and fit a provent to stop it happening again. Get the injectors flow tested and change if needed.

Edit to add

On startup if it blows white smoke the injector seals are shot. This results in combustion gases leaking past the seal into the rocker area and burning the oil that sits there. This creates black sand like shit which will eventually make its way to the sump and block the oil pickup. There is no low oil pressure warning light and the engine will trash itself.

You’ll know if the injectors are shot. Startup on a cold engine and drive immediately. If it sounds like 10 hammers striking an anvil they’re gone. This is also creating a hole in the top of the pistons.

You’re welcome.

Probably the most reliable diesal engine out there. Mine has 414.,000 km. Keep in mind it was the number one selling vehicle, spare parts are easily found. I had a chip on mine for 200,000 km (still have it) but recently had my injections done plus got it remapped. Had compression test done before remapped and was perfect.
Timing belt easy to do plus Im on my second starter motor and Alternator which are an easy install.
I should really sell it and buy a new ute but it keeps going and I cannot see any reason I wont get to 600,000km without any issue
