Ruger American Ranch 7.62x39

Post by fenring »

Realised I hadn't shown this off on AV yet. :D

This thing really is TINY.

Overall the feel is somewhat like a Tikka T3 only scaled down a bit in action length and not quite as smooth. The bolt is thick and heavy when compared to a Howa Mini. The shroud is plastic. It has a cocked indicator tab under the shroud like a T3 bunt a tang safety instead and a similar bolt release on the LHS. The mag release is a tad extended and needs to be push forward, positively. The ten round mags fit snug and I can't see one falling out. The mags have an empty bolt hold open feature as they are Mini 30 mags. Trigger is nice and crisp and adjustable.

I've mounted a Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7x32 in Weaver Top Mount rings which are about as low as you can get. There is plenty of room between the bolt handle and the scope and I'm looking down the middle of the scope with a good cheek weld.

I got two genuine Ruger ten round mags to go with it and the LGS has the PPU ammo, 123gr PSP at a good price. I'll see how they shoot.

It's around 2" shorter than my 96/44 which is already a light and compact rifle. Tikka T3 looks ginormous.

Sighted in and splatted a few foxes the other week.

So this is the model that takes the AR mags?

How's the bolt smoothness/noise? Saw a video on basically lapping it with JB Bore Paste which seemed to work.

Also, how's the weight. They say 6.1lb but they always generalise...

I sighted it in with the PPU ammo and have shot a few foxes with it just to test it out.

The caliber was adequate.

My yearly pigging trip at this time of the year won't be happening for various reasons so no pig action for a while, at this stage.

No mate, the 7.62x39 model uses Ruger Mini 30 mags. The same rifle that's just come out in .300BLK and .223 uses the AR mags.

The action felt fine to me, bit of a wipe down and some lube and a bit of cycling and it's fine.

I haven't weighed the rifle, but yeah it's light, and small. It's actually shorter than my Ruger 96/44. Chest is 1m across.

Thanks for that just the thing for the quad most of my rifles hang out either side,
Might just shorten the barrel on my 308.
How is the noise?

Not bad mate. Small case capacity and a .30 bore.
