The 5.7 MMJ

Post by stinkitup »

Thought I would post some pics and info about this great little cartridge and the rifle I bought from Johno1.

The case is a M1 30 cal necked down to 224. Shorter than a hornet but is fatter due to being a rimless case with a case head size similar to the hornet rim.

I will put up some more official history on it soon.

The rifle is a cz/brno 527 the mini mauser and a new hornet barrel was used to chamber it.

So far I am working up some loads with cases stuffed full of 2207 and 40gr ballistic tips from nosler.

Will post sime pics a little later.

If things work out a compressed charge should be netting between 3000 and 3100 fps not bad for less than 16gr of powder.

Hey stinky, I got me one of them thar 5.7 johnsons, the bloke I got it off made it from a ZKW465 Hornet, unfortunately he left the throat too long, they didn't take out all the old chamber. Anyway, he was using 2205 with the 40gn Vmax, Ill dig out his load, I tried a few, also the Sierra 40gn Blitzkings, both shot alright, but nothing to set the world on fire. Im getting the throat shortened so will see how it goes after that. Yes johno still waiting.
Im actually thinking of converting it to a 17 HH, as my 223 shoots 40gn vmaxes pretty well, dies and factory ammo are even available in Griffith these days, now my 20/222 is a goer, I reckon Ive pretty well covered the bases with this small cal stuff.

Funny thing is, my first post on here was asking for information on the 5.7mm, I was just a poor ordinary rabbit shooter who wanted nothing more that something a little bit different. Im holding some members on here totally responsible for me ending up the way I am.

If you need help, QuickLoad has this listed as a 22Spitfire.

I can run simulations for you ... I've got Johno's 17PeeWee and hope to start load work this week when a set of mounts arrive.

Bit worried about the old curmudgeon too, he said 'No more builds' and seems to be sticking to it.
Cheers...

As promised, two cases on the outside are the MMJ the inside ones are a 222rimmed and a 6.5x55.

With my old swede, a par of mausers I suppose.

As far as a 20 cal goes it would be very nice, Johno loves his 19 Badger which is the same case and the 19 cal. I think the 17 would be good too. It has very similar powder capacity as a 218 Bee. With Bee loads and Cons Quickload workings Thanks heaps Con  it should crack the 3000 mark which will make me happy. I think lilgun would def be the best powder but and Johno's initial loads using this were producing over 3200.

I have shot 5 rounds through it last week, had some issue's with some seated projectiles in empty, fireformed and neck sized cases not chambering, think I had the seater die not correctly setup (first time with rcbs dies). Finally ran them all through the FLS die and was all good with the 5 I got to shoot. This was with 14gr of 2207 and was shooting way high at 200m which I was surprised. Will do some more working up, I have some 40 Nosler BT's and Varmageddons to try and some Barnes 45 tsx's for this and the 222 just to see if they shoot.

At the range all the blokes were like well well what is this case, thats very cool, awesome etc etc.

Hopefully have the crows on the move ... flying in pieces

Some more loaded MMJ rounds, Nosler 40 Ballistic Tip, 45 gr tsx and 40 Varmageddon tipped. I think the Ballistic tips are the bomb but doesn't hurt to try something else.

Loaded up ladder style tests in the ballistic tips and TSX just to get an idea of pressure etc, 14.2 - 15.2 2207 for the nosler, very much compressed loads, going to make a drop tube which will help, the 14.2 sits right at the neck and shoulder junction, 15.2 I tapped the funnel/case six times and it settled some.

Will see how these fly then try some groups.

Shot the MMJ again today with the ladder style loads, testing for pressure signs with AR2207.

Took my old zoom camera and took some pics and put the results on one target, it was very blustery and cold today, was told no good with that little thing at 300 but I think with a proper load it will definitely embarrass a few at 300 yds. There are only 3 tsx on target as the first two didn't make it and fell short,

POA was the white card in the centre for the ballistic tips and varmageddons and was holding on the ring above the soldier centre for the tsx so they hit the target. Nice flat primers from 14.6 grains (winchester sr) which are soft I believe but no stiff bolt lift so possibly can run up to 15.5 without issue.

Originally wanted a .172 version on the 30 Carbine or maybe even the more recent FN 5.7x28mm case but went for the .17 Ackley Hornet when a used Brno showed up instead.

Con has a 17 PeeWee which is on the carbine case again be good to see his results.

A 17 ackley hornet prob doesn't give much up to this little case anyway.
