100+200 Fly .22RF

Post by kickinback »

I’m in the process of building something for the above comp and am interested in what ammo people are using. As always I’m looking forward to your replies.

Cheers Glen

What i did was shoot 10 shot strings of different lots of ammo and found the one that had the lowest ES. A large ES at distance will give you vertical in your groups.

Out of my Stiller Lonestar i got the following ES (data is 4 years old)
Centre X - 14fps
SK Standard Plus - 58fps
X Act - 42fps
Midas PLus - 21fps
RWS - 37fps
R100 - 24fps
Fiocchi 320 - 28fps
Eley Team - 25fps
Eley Tenex - 20fps
Eley Match - 45fps
SK Rifle Match - 30fps
SK Match 50 - 29fps

The best groups at 50m was the X Act and Midas plus.

I shot 200 fly with Midas Plus because i had more of it then centre x. When i was playing around at 300y and 500y on f class targets i did a test with SK Standard Plus and Midas at both distances and the windage in the groups was very close but the vertical changed a lot and that was due to the ES.

Lapua standard club.
Batch 220/42 then 223/42 and for a different rifle batches 217 or 224

Whichever 22 ammo you choose make sure you store it projectile down.
It doesn't even hurt to drive around with it in your car for a week.
Also 22 ammo changes batch to batch, if you find 1 you like buy big.
Seddo also did not give you the speed as marked on the box of his eley ammo as that also makes a difference, you may like eley black/match 1090 but someone else may have more luck with 1130.
Rinso was not far wrong with his house brick.

I remember Rinso’s analogy well. I just want to shoot more.

Ask me when the T1X is here and I've had a chance to play.

This thread at rimfirecentral I've found fascinating. Both for how poor some ammunition is, how much seems to be CCI made despite what's on the boxes, but also how good really good ammunition can be.

I'm pretty sure I told you that I would give it a crack if you were gonna get more serious about this 22 stuff.

Really trying to be interested but it isn't working

I might have lied accidentally

Something to consider Glen, you probably already factored it in already, is tuners. While i find them unpredictable on a centerfire, they certainly have a place on rimfires.
Weekend just gone i had to reset mine on the T1x after some minor modifications.
Ammo was CCI standard, yes I'm stingy, range is 75 yards. I find 75 shows more without the influence of the elements destroying groups at a 100 yards and 50 can tell fibs that show up at 200 or more.

The alteration i made from previous is an increase in weight. The original weight had the dog wagging the tail. The groups were OK, but the settings were too close to determine the exact spot. The tail now wags the dog and controls the barrel far more resulting in immediate feedback. The numbers beside the groups are millimetres from zero. The Rx formula on the 9th harmonic said 7.25 mm. Winding in to 7.0 blew the group up as pictured. Half a mil out is good as seen and held tight out to 200 meters during our comp later in the day.

Thanks Tony. I have done several recaps on your T1x post regarding your tuner. Looking forward to getting the rifle.
