heavy weight .224 pills, which ones?
Hey All, It's a beautiful clear sunny day and I should have been shooting 5 stand, anyway shit happens but 5 stand ain't, oh well. Anyway. it seems like I have some 5.6x57 dies on their way and was starting to ponder about projectiles. At the very least I'll be pulling the FMJ' s out of the factory ...

Re: Battle of the scout/varmint rifle hots up.
Each to their own, but I reckon the whole scout concept look like shit. I have a particular dislike to removable magazines, especially long 10 shot ones that hang down so far under the action. They look to me like rifles for the wanna be tactards, Gotta agree with that one, those Ruger Scout...

Re: firing pin protrusion (recock bolt)?
Yeh Mick, I had a bit of a flashback to my teen years where somehow I managed to have a bolt "fall apart' literally in my hands, been a bit "gunshy" ever since

Re: firing pin protrusion (recock bolt)?
Woohoo had a quick play while I was home for lunch and got it back ok. The original safety was always obstructed by scope but thought it went to almost vertical, now doesn't move at all? Gee, there is not much you can't learn from a nerdy looking American kid making a youtube video in his bedroom i...

Re: firing pin protrusion (recock bolt)?
Just did a bit of googling and from a couple of sources it seems like excessive protrusion is not an issue. Which I guess leaves pressure or soft primers, maybe a combination of both. Die supply for handloading is not looking good at present with none in stock and on back order both here and in the ...

Re: firing pin protrusion (recock bolt)?
OK managed to get bolt recoked but now I can;t get it back in the right location to get back in the rifle. Sometimes I think I should just leave things alone

firing pin protrusion (recock bolt)?
Well, OK I'm measured my firing in protrusion on the Mauser (see 5.6x57 thread) and as best as I can measure with my verniers it comes up as .038" (.965mm) averaged on a couple of measures. Too much? Definately not too little as if it was wouldn't fire. OK another question. I managed to release...

Re: 5.6x57 first shots (and second)
When you like going to the range again, if I am not at work, I may wander down with you, have a couple of rifles that need to be rezeroed myself after the move dowm. Mick I'll give you a yell, got plenty of things to fine tune over the warmer months so I may be in for a few range trips :rifle: Chee...

Re: 5.6x57 first shots (and second)
I've been chasing up some dies so looks like I'll be pulling a few rounds and trying some handloads to see what it does.
Maybe even grab a box of some other pills and see how it goes with those, summer is looking busy with load development as I got a few things to fine tune.
Cheers,
Waldo

Re: 5.6x57 first shots (and second)
I would have kinda thought if it was firing pin length issue it would have done it to all of them? How much pin protrusion would be considered too much?
Can I assume the only impact of a tight chamber would be increased velocity (pressure) for a smaller load?

Re: 5.6x57 first shots (and second)
Looks more like a firing pin problem The primers do not seem flattened just peirced Mmmm, I've since had a closer look at the fired FMJ rounds and they are "cratered" a bit. At first glance (ie: without glasses) they look like shallow strikes but look closer and also run a finger nail ove...

Re: 5.6x57 first shots (and second)
A quick range trip this morning and things are looking promising. For a mug range shooter and factory ammo it's doing OK. 3 shot groups with 74g FMJ's at 100m: http://i425.photobucket.com/albums/pp334/Waldyo/20140914_123816_zps5a6b82df.jpg http://i425.photobucket.com/albums/pp334/Waldyo/20140914_123...

Re: 5.6x57 first shots
What pills powder combination are are starting with. For starters the factory RWS rounds that came with the rifle, they are a 74g Konepoint (some german word for soft point I assume) plus some 74g FMJ's. I'm hopeful of both rounds having the same point of impact and on todays initial firing looks p...
