17 Squirrel reamer
All, I posted this on another forum but have little joy so spreading the net. Well because I am a gluten for punishment I am thinking of building a little 17 Squirrel. Why? Well ….because… First things first, does anybody know of a gunsmith / collector / hoarder of reamers or general crazy person wh...

Re: Bent Spindle
I have bent mine in the past and just screwed it out. From memory that should screw all the way down and out. Very easy to do with the 17. I was using my swaging press as a reloading press and did not feel a thing. Still do not know how it happened but getting a new one is easy....or it was but thes...

Re: 17 cal projectiles
Thanks for the question, I have a little 17Hornet which does 17 and 20 gen projectile very well but as the boiler is small the 30gn is just a little slower. I want the speed. Ref velocity, the 20gn has now been pushed past 4300f/s and I was interested enough to do the maths and worked out that the ...

Re: 17 cal projectiles
I am here and listening. Sorry I am a little south of home at the moment. I do have some that you could give a run but I am not even near a post office even if I did have some within reach. I stoped making the 30gn as I just never used them. They were easy to make but velocity was down and the 17 is...

Re: Does this sound like a stock flex issue?
The old bipod bounce. POI from prone to sticks to bipod will change a little. Just the way you hold it will change things. There is a lot of threads about the same question. Bipods can make a good rifle just shoot odd. We always talk about consistency, changing the support structure ( hold and fron...

Re: 22gn, 17 Cal researchers required
I agree the 25gn shows promise but the factory 20gn have it all over my 20gn projectiles. I see the velocity is up in the 4K mark. By my calculations I think the 17 cal should be good for 4500fps. When I get back to my press, I will make some shorter 20gn and send them through. You never know until ...

Re: 22gn, 17 Cal researchers required
Thanks for this write up. I expected more from the projectiles. On that note, there may a distinct step change in relation to length. I do tend to build them with a longer jacket which effects stability. The SP were .455” long and I can not make them any shorter than that but the open tip is .490” l...

Re: 22gn, 17 Cal researchers required
Maybe I should send you some 20gn, but You may have some already, just see if the group is comparable.
Those 22gn results do not seem to flash at all. I expected better. A lot better. Just for interest what is the the length of the 20gn projectile.

Re: 22gn, 17 Cal researchers required
Just ran some numbers through the Berger barrel twist calculator, but those projectiles are stable until you get to 1 in 12” and slower at around 3500-3600 f/s. Looking forward to hearing the details.
The Open tip comes out at .490” long and the SP .455” long.

Re: 22gn, 17 Cal researchers required
Thanks for the first report. Did they group? Interesting to hear that the SP liked going slower. The only difference between them is length, as they both came out of the same set of dies. Just goes to show weight is not the only factor in stability. Length plays its role. What barrel twist ? Bets on...

Re: Ball Micrometer
I have not found it inconsistent, if anything it has proved very reliable. You do have to keep it clean and free from anything that would gum it up. It is defiantly good to the .001”. It is the only ball / digital micrometer that I have.
My projectile mics are to the .0001.
